  1. Founded in 1819 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles. Singapore was a
  2. British colony until 1959 when it became autonomous within the
  3. Commonwealth.  On September 16, 1963 it joined Malaya, Sarawak
  4. and Sabah to form the Federation of Malaysia.  Tensions grew in
  5. the Federation between Malaysia and Chinese Singaporians and on
  6. August 9, 1965 Singapore became an independent country.  It is
  7. one of the world's largest ports, with extremely high standard of
  8. health, education and housing.  International banking is well
  9. established.
